Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Valdosta Early College Academy (VECA)?

Valdosta Early College Academy (VECA) was established in 2008 through a partnership between the Valdosta City School System and Valdosta State University. As an Early College school, VECA blends middle and high school with college. Our students have the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and up to 60 semester hours of college credit by the end of 12th grade.

  • What makes VECA different from the other middle and high schools?

Our program has a college preparatory focus beginning in the 6th grade. Innovative, engaging instruction; collaborative group work; a focus on literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking, and observing); and the integration of technology distinguish VECA from other middle schools. Also, our strong partnership with Valdosta State University provides academic, cultural, and social opportunities to students and their parents.

  • Is the curriculum different?

VECA adheres to the Georgia Performance Standards and the instructional framework followed by all schools in Valdosta City Schools. However, we are given a great deal of freedom as to how we develop and plan instruction. As a student-centered learning environment our instruction is designed to meet the needs of each student. Also, students receive additional support during and after school through our partnership with VSU.

  • How are students selected to attend VECA?

Any fifth grade student  enrolled in Valdosta City Schools may apply for admission to VECA. Our program will begin accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year at the end of January. Admission to VECA is based on several criteria: standardized test results, attendance, and behavior, along with recommendations from current teachers, administrators, and members of the community. Our target student is the average student who has great potential and will be the first in their family to attend college. However, we accept a diverse group of students into our program and encourage anyone interested in the program to complete an application.

  • Is transportation to VECA provided to students?

Beginning in 2012-2013 students catch a bus in their neighborhood directly to VECA. In the afternoon transportation is provided for extracurricular activities at the students home school.

  • Do you provide breakfast and lunch?

Students are provided breakfast and lunch by the School Nutrition Program in our lunch room. Students are served the same meals as other students in VCS. All of our students have had free lunch for the past five years.

  • Do VECA students participate in extracurricular activities?

VECA provides some after school activities and students can participate in activities at their home schools (clubs, sports, cheerleading, dances, …)
